ISLAMIC, Umayyad Caliphate. temp. 'Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, AH 65-86 / AD 685-705. Fals (Copper, 23 mm, 2.59 g, 1 h), Standing Caliph, Manbij (Hierapolis). Caliph standing facing, placing his right hand on sword; down left field, “Commander of the Faithful” in Arabic; down right field, the title of the Caliph. Rev. Transformed cross standing on three steps; up left field, wāf; up right field, mint designation; around, part of the first Kalima. SICA I, 679; Walker 102. Rare. An unusually complete example with an attractive earthen patina. Minor cleaning marks, otherwise, very fine.
